Maryport. (We
by-passed Cockermouth accidentally, Workington deliberately).
The Senhouse Roman Museum (v. amateurish website, says he!), eluded us due to DSS (disappearing signpost syndrome), so one day we'll have to go back and find out about the Roman milefortlets which followed the coast from the western end of Hadrian's Wall.
Home made(?) helicopter south of Allonby in the
Solway Coast AONB.
We drove on up to Silloth, an odd place with an air of long gone prosperity, to Skinburness and down to Wigton, then southeast along the B5305 through Hutton-in-the-Forest to Penrith. In this area many of the roads feel like Roman roads and many of them undoubtedly are. Wigton to Penrith was excellent driving, swooping along on lolloping roads.

Appleby-in-Westmorland.

The Eden at Appleby. (A long time ago I kayaked a good stretch of this river, but can no longer remember which!).
To round off the weekend we drove, again on excellent roads, to Tebay and into Kendal.
