171002 RELEASED: Ngawang Sangdrol, Prominent Tibetan Political Prisoner Ngawang Sangdrol, one of Tibet's most prominent political prisoners and the longest serving female political prisoner detained by Beijing, was released from prison earlier today. First detained in 1987 at age 10 and again at age 13 when she spent nine months in detention without any formal charge, Sangdrol was again detained in 1992 for peacefully demonstrating against Chinese rule. After years of sustained international pressure, Ngawang Sangdrol, 24, was released today with nine years remaining on her sentence.

Destruction of Serthar Institute (Click to Preview Video*) In June 2001, the Chinese government began demolishing the homes of thousands of monks and nuns at the Larung Gar monastic encampment in Serthar. In the following months, Chinese authorities demolished parts of Yachen, another large monastic encampment in eastern Tibet. The scale of this continuing demolition of monastic structures  is unprecedented since the Cultural Revolution. (Audio is included in this video. Please adjust volume accordingly). 

040402 - The House International Relations Committee convened a March 7 hearing on "U.S. Policy Considerations in Tibet" to discuss what the U.S. government has done on Tibet since the Bush Administration took over. Undersecretary Paula Dobriansky, the U.S. Special Coordinator for Tibetan Issues, reported on U.S. Government efforts to promote dialogue between the Chinese leadership and the Dalai Lama or his representatives. Lodi Gyari, Special Envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and Richard Gere, the Chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet, also testified at the hearing. 070402: China arrests another spiritual master and others in eastern Tibet.
210102 Ngawang Choephel, a Tibetan Political Prisoner since 1995, has been set free! Ngawang was arrested under charges of espionage and served more than 6 years of an 18-year sentence before being released through medical parole.
