Tashi Lhunpo Monastery Seeks Release of the Panchen Lama (April 25, 2003) The re-established Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in India has issued a statement calling for the release of Gendhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama, who has been under detention by Chinese authorities since 1995. In a statement commemorating the Panchen Lama's birthday on April 25, 2003, Tashi Lhunpo, said it was concerned about the well being of the Panchen Lama.

He was charged with involvement in an April bomb blast that injured several people and with "engaging in splittist activities," a blanket term used by the Chinese government to detain individuals for arbitrary or political reasons. Reports concerning their trial and detention indicate that the Tibetans were not given a fair trial and that the conditions of their detention violated established international norms - they were tortured
