When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300 C. The Russians used a pencil.

 Make Poverty History

Oxfam needs your help to turn up the heat on the world's four coffee giants - Nestle, Sara Lee, Kraft and Procter & Gamble as part of the call to make trade fair.

Oxfam needs you to e-mail these coffee monsters and ask them to pay coffee farmers a decent price, which allows farmers to afford to send their children to school, keep their families healthy and fed. A letter from you will help keep the pressure on and demonstrate that this issue will not go away until they share their massive profits with the people who helped create them.

Beijing Olympic Games

Although the Chinese people may deserve the Games, the Chinese government does not and there is little evidence to date that the Games will be, as the International Olympic Committee claim, "a force for good" (IOC Executive Director Francois Carrard, July 2001).

OIL TOGETHER NOW
Bipartisan coalition presses Bush to get behind oil-use reduction

Lambasting U.S. oil addiction: It's not just for America-hating radical homosexual vegetarian Schiavo-killing eco-terrorists anymore! A growing bipartisan coalition is arguing that U.S. dependence on foreign oil is a serious national security threat. Today, a letter signed by 26 former national-security officials from both Republican and Democratic administrations is winging its way to the White House, bearing a plea for President Bush to kick off "a major new initiative to curtail U.S. consumption." "I don't often find myself in agreement with those at the Natural Resources Defense Council, but ... I do think there is common ground," said neocon Frank Gaffney, a former Reagan administration official. The letter was organized by the bipartisan Energy Future Coalition, which arose in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks to advocate for tighter fuel-economy standards and higher subsidies for alternative fuels. Auto-worker unions, automakers, and farming groups -- traditional foes of environmental groups -- are on board, perhaps more comfortable around the manly men of the national-security apparatus.

Despite relentless claims by the dairy industry, milk is neither the only, nor the best, source of calcium and has little effect on bone strength. Broccoli, spinach, watercress, nuts, seeds, soya and other plant foods are better and healthier sources.

Cows produce milk to feed their babies – just as humans do. It flows for the best part of a year and then it stops. More milk requires more babies. The modern dairy cow is bred to produce over 10 times more milk than her calf would drink. This is an enormous physical burden which takes its toll on her body.

Only humans drink milk after weaning – and it's milk from a different species!

It’s no more natural than drinking badger’s milk or cat’s milk.

It's designed for calves!

Many humans find milk hard to digest and the result is allergies.

Hormones in milk are linked to ovarian, breast and prostate cancer, as well as juvenile-onset diabetes. The saturated fat, cholesterol and animal protein it contains are linked to many other diseases.
